Guest lecture for Hydrology MSc students

We supported a guest lecture for Hydrology MSc students at Newcastle University on Thursday 2nd November.

Matthew Cowdell, Flood Forecasting Analyst at JBA Consulting, delivered the lecture to students who are currently studying the ‘hydrosystems modelling and management’ module. He introduced fluvial flood forecast modelling and explained how modelling can increase vital lead time for emergency responders and the public to respond before a flooding event.

Matthew commented “My lecture formed part of a session providing students with a wider appreciation of hydrological modelling applications. Alongside others from industry, we covered a range of modelling in flood forecasting, groundwater, water quality and natural flood management (NFM). As a previous student of the MSc course, I am well aware of the importance of these sessions. Understanding how studies are relevant in the ‘real-world’ provides students with much-needed context.”
