Congratulations to our Scholarship recipients!

We’re delighted to announce that we have awarded two scholarships to study Flood and Coastal Risk Management at Lancaster University.

Tomas Jonathan, a Flood Risk Analysis Advisor at Natural Resources Wales, and Liam Hall, a Project Manager at Rivers Ecology (part of Norfolk Rivers Trust) will both start a Postgraduate Certificate later this year.  The part-time CIWEM accredited course is focused on the practical application of technical skills and best practice techniques and is designed to meet the needs of professionals looking for further specialist training in flood and coastal risk management.

Our support aims to help individual recipients bring benefits to communities through third sector or public sector organisations.

Tomas Jonathan, Natural Resources Wales

“After finishing my PhD in Physical Oceanography, I was very fortunate to be given a position by Natural Resources Wales back home in North Wales as a Flood Risk Advisor. I wanted a role where I could use my technical skills for real-world benefit. My goal is to become an expert in fluvial and coastal modelling at NRW, and I am ambitious to achieve this. I have a lot to learn!

The PGCert offers me the chance to study with and learn from experts in this field, about the key technical and professional aspects of becoming a good flood modeller. The opportunity to study coastal processes and flooding is of particular interest. The topics covered in the course (e.g. river processes, hydrology, auditing models etc.) are directly related to my current role at NRW, and essential to my fulfilling that role as competently as possible.  I strongly believe the support from JBA Trust will not only benefit my understanding and knowledge, but that of my co-workers and the service we provide to the public.”

Liam Hall, Rivers Ecology

“This course is a great opportunity for me to enhance skills relevant to my role as a project manager at Rivers Ecology, the consultancy arm of Norfolk Rivers Trust, while still working full time. I hope that courses in the areas of hydraulic modelling and floodplain management will be particularly useful. Receiving this scholarship from the JBA Trust will allow me to contribute more to flood risk management and catchment protection through nature based solutions in Norfolk, and I can’t wait to get started.”
