Southampton Science and Engineering Festival (SOTSEF)
We’ve been reflecting on our weekend at the University of Southampton Science and Engineering Festival (SOTSEF), and what a brilliant event it was.
It was fantastic to see so many people getting hands-on with the wave tank and using it as a starting point to talk about flooding, climate change and resilience. Some of the best conversations came from simple questions that quickly turned into bigger discussions about how flooding happens, what we can do to reduce risk, and how communities can adapt in the future.
Events like this are a really important reminder of why outreach matters. Being able to take the science behind flooding and turn it into something practical, visual and interactive helps make these topics more accessible and hopefully a bit less intimidating. If we’ve helped a few young people see themselves as future engineers, hydrologists, geographers or scientists, then that’s a success in our book.
A big thank you to our team for your hard work and enthusiasm – Amber Humphries, Luna Richardson, Ella Mitchell, Samuel Hotchkiss, Jacqui Hooper and Jake Finch.
Also a pleasure to work with Linley Hastewell, PhD, CGeog(Geomorph) FRGS and Billie-Mae White.
