Water safety demonstration flume
The water safety flume shows how water behaves in rivers when it interacts with different structures, like weirs or culverts, and how river currents can quickly become dangerous.
Both natural and engineered river features can be placed in the river channel, for example a waterfall, stepping stones, weirs of various designs, bridges, fish passes, culverts and culvert screens.
We developed the water safety flume in partnership with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. It is being used by their Public Safety Officers to help raise water safety awareness in local schools and communities.
Since this flume was created, we have helped many other organisations from the UK and other countries develop and build their own water safety flumes by sharing our experiences as well as designs and technical specifications.
Our free standing flume is currently on loan to the London Fire Brigade at their Water Safety Centre of Excellence in Twickenham.
