Rain tank

This rainfall run-off model shows what happens to water after it rains

We can explore how much water flows across the land into rivers, streams and drainage systems, compared to how much water is able to infiltrate into the soil.

The model is fun, accessible and interactive, helping people learn how the landscape and different surfaces and soils affect rainfall run-off.

Different inserts can be used to explore how runoff is affected by:

  • different vegetation and soils (e.g. grass or peat bog)
  • antecedent conditions (how wet or dry the soil is)
  • land use and urban environments
  • SuDS features (sustainable urban drainage systems)

We can also change the slope of the land surface to explore how topography affects how water moves through the landscape and the rate of infiltration.
