Training day for ‘Healthy Weirs’ volunteers

The JBA Trust continued its support for the ‘Healthy Weirs Project’ in Derbyshire by supporting a training day for volunteers on 14 October in Belper.

This initiative, promoted by the DerwentWISE community partnership, is supporting local volunteers in the inspection and documentation of the historic river weirs between Matlock and Derby. These unique structures, some dating from the 17th century, form an integral part of the World heritage site status of this part of Derbyshire.

The training was led by Jeremy Benn, a chartered civil engineer and weir specialist and Director of JBA Trust.  Jeremy gave a talk on the history of weir building in England and how they were built and used.  The rest of the day was spent ‘in the field’ visiting the weirs at Milford and Belper.
